Update! SBSD Summer Programs 2020

  • May 15, 2020

Dear Solana Beach School District Families,

As you saw in Superintendent Brentlinger’s message on Monday, May 11, the Solana Beach School District Board of Education has voted unanimously to continue school closures through the end of the school year, which is Friday, June 12. Distance learning will continue through June 5, with end-of-year activities planned for the last week of school. The Superintendent recounted the current status of evolving state and county health and safety requirements and the uncertainty as to when school campuses will be able to safely reopen.

In light of the current situation, we want to provide our families with an update on the status of Summer Programming:

    Extended School Year (ESY)

Extended School Year (ESY) is a summer program designed for students who receive special education and related services. Eligibility for ESY is determined by a student’s individualized education program team. Based on the guidelines set forth by the County and the Governor’s Executive Orders, for summer 2020, the schedule for Extended School Year (ESY) has been shifted to July 6 - July 31, 2020 (20 days), with a tentative distance learning or blended model (distance learning and in person learning) at two campuses: Carmel Creek and Skyline, should social distancing guidelines permit.

    Summer Reading Intervention

Summer Reading Intervention is a program Solana Beach School District offers each summer for students exiting Kindergarten through second grade. Classroom teachers use multiple criteria to identify students who can benefit from additional reading support during the summer. The K-2 Summer Reading Intervention Program is for students previously identified prior to school closures and will continue to be offered with a shifted timeline of July 20 - July 31, 2020 (10 days), with a tentative live or blended model at two campuses: Carmel Creek and Skyline, should social distancing guidelines permit.

In addition, the Solana Beach Instructional Services Department is exploring the development of a two-week Reading Intervention class for students exiting 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, July 20 - July 31, 2020 (10 days), with a tentative live or blended model at two campuses: Carmel Creek and Skyline, should social distancing guidelines permit. As with the K-2 Reading Intervention Program, students would be invited to participate based on multiple data points, including the most recent available assessment data collected prior to school closures and teacher/principal input.

    Online Menu of Learning Options

The Solana Beach Instructional Services Department is exploring the development of grade-level- specific menus of asynchronous learning opportunities to be made available to all SBSD students as optional summer learning reinforcement and enrichment. These learning menus would be developed by Solana Beach teachers and staff, and would be designed to provide families both online/virtual and offline/non-screen-dependent learning activities for students during the summer

months. Families could choose to use these activities flexibly within their summer schedules. These activities would not be monitored by teachers during the summer months.

    Summer Enrichment

After much thought and consideration, the Solana Beach Summer Enrichment program will not be offered this year. We know this will come as a disappointment to many of you and we, too, are disappointed. However, with the uncertain length of county and state stay at home orders, along with planning needing to occur prior to reopening campuses, we no longer have the lead time necessary to coordinate Summer Enrichment for this year. We look forward to summer 2021, when we hope to re-launch our better-than-ever annual Summer Enrichment program.

In the meantime, from all of us in the Solana Beach School District, please stay safe and well.

    Sincerely,

    Jennifer Goldston
Director of Instruction and Educational Technology
