The Right Start
- Visit the Center several times with your child before the first day you will be leaving your child alone. These visits help children become familiar with the teachers and classroom routines with you close by for support.
- Remember that separation is a natural process and that getting used to preschool takes time. Some children do very well the first two weeks at school and then experience a delayed reaction to the separation. It is important to be consistent with arrival times and separation rituals. Please have your child at school no later than 9:00 a.m. Children who arrive on time feel more comfortable in the group and have an easier time making new friends and adjusting to the new routines.
- Wake your child early enough that you don’t need to rush. Rushing to school places undo stress on you and your child.
- Let your child help with morning rituals such as packing lunch.
- Never leave school without saying goodbye to your child. When you are ready to say goodbye, tell him/her when you will return and then leave quickly. Prolonging separation can be agonizing for both children and parents. If you are still concerned about your child’s welfare after arriving at home or work, please call us at (858) 794-7160.
- Keep in mind that every child is different and has his/her own ways of dealing with new situations. Please do not assume that a crying child who is off by his or herself is being ignored. Staff attempts to offer every child comfort and reassurance, but some children want and need some time alone to comfort themselves. Self-comforting skills are a giant step toward independence!
- Please remember that the preschool staff wants your child to have a successful experience as much as you do. Feel free to share your questions and concerns with the teachers and the Principal.
