Dear Solana Highlands Families,
Health Office Wish List We are in need of used clothing items in our Health office. (Girls and boys pants - sizes S, M, and L). Donations can be brought to the front office. Thank you for your consideration.
Conversion to K-6 Discussion Our Superintendent has engaged our community in discussions regarding converting to a K-6 campus. The most recent meetings were held last month. See what prompted these discussions as well as the top wonderings and topics being discussed. Links to the meeting presentation and FAQ's are below. Please review and forward your own thoughts and questions. The timeline for District Employees to make recommendations to the Board of Education is early 2020. Now is the time to voice what you want our school environment and priorities to be! It's a unique opportunity and all opinions are welcomed and respected.
Care and Share Program 12/4-12/19 As we enter into the holiday season, Solana Highlands provides us with a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about the joys of giving. For those of you who are new to our school, the Care and Share program has become a yearly tradition at Solana Highlands. Through this program, each classroom sponsors a needy family in our school district. The families with the greatest needs are identified by school personnel. We will be collecting items in the classrooms. Room Parents will send out communications with more detail.
Social-Emotional Learning As a part of our district and school’s focus on Social Emotional Learning we are reading All Learning is Social and Emotional, Helping students Develop Essential Skills for the Classroom and Beyond, by Nancy Frey, Douglas Fisher and Dominique Smith. Our Solana Highlands staff is discussing the book during our staff meetings, so I thought I would offer highlights of the chapters as we discuss them as a staff.
Chapter 1 - Learning That’s Worthwhile
The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has identified five interrelated cognitive, affective and behavioral competencies: Self- Awareness, Social awareness, Relationship Skills, Self-management and Responsible decision making. Research has shown that when students develop prosocial behaviors and self-regulation skills, they learn more, are able to effectively manage their thinking, attention, and behavior and are more likely to have better grades and higher standardized test scores.
The book talks about how SEL needs to be integrated into the academic mainstream rather than remain on the periphery. If your child has been at Solana Highlands for any length of time, you know that our school wants to create great students as well as great people.
A little something to think about:
Looking for a simple (free) gift to give your child during the holidays...try these words…I’m proud of you.
I believe in you.
I want the best for you.
I will stand with you.
I love you.
Here is a wonderful (short) article titled 6 Simple Sentences Your Child Needs to Hear You Say. It’s a good reminder of how impactful our words can be.
