    Red Ribbon Week

Mark Your Calendars! Red Ribbon Week is starting on Monday, October 28th! This year our theme for Red Ribbon Week is "Healthy Me, Way To Be!"

Red Ribbon Week is a nationwide program which is sponsored by the San Dieguito Alliance and endorsed by the Solana Beach School District and PTA.  It was organized to honor the memory of Drug Enforcement Federal Agent Enrique Camarena from San Diego County who was murdered in 1985 by a drug cartel. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to establish a commitment within our community and our schools to promoting healthy lifestyles and creating an awareness of the issues and problems associated with the abuse of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.

During Red Ribbon Week, Skyline students will participate in activities designed to emphasize the importance of living healthy lives and promoting self-esteem consistent with this year’s theme “Healthy Me, Way to Be!

The following are the activities planned for Red Ribbon Week:

    • Monday, October 28th - Take The Pledge! Say "High Five to a Healthy Me!" by adding your hand print to the pledge posters during lunch recess.
    • Tuesday, October 29th - Wear Red Day! Show your support for Red Ribbon Week by wearing Red.
    • Wednesday, October 30th - "Play It Safe - Defense Strategies for Children" special assembly. Find out what Chihuahua Confidence is all about. 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. (Grades 5-6), 11:00-11:50 a.m. (Grades K-4). Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
    • Thursday, October 31st - Happy Halloween! Wear Your Halloween Costume to School. Costumes may not include the following: weapons (knives, guns, swords, etc.), gore, blood, be gruesome in nature. All costumes must adhere to the dress code and be appropriate for school.
    • Friday, November 1st - "My Future Is So Bright!" Wear bright colors because you shine!

For the sixth grade students, there will be a presentation by the San Dieguito Alliance high school seniors, Teen Presenters’ who have made the choice to be  tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs on October 25th.

Red Ribbon Week is the perfect opportunity to talk with your children regarding what they’ve learned during Red Ribbon Week about making healthy choices and further discussing your personal philosophies or family standards regarding health, nutrition, exercise, peer pressure, and the dangers associated with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and drug abuse.
