Dear Skyline Families,
I hope this letter finds you enjoying summer and relaxing before the start of school. I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share how honored I am to be the principal of Skyline. Every interaction I've had in this district since I started in July has been thoughtful, kind, and considerate, and I am excited to be a member of this community. I look forward to getting to know each of your families and understanding what is important to you and our community. My door is always open and I am available to you. Please find time to stop by my office and introduce yourself.
After being at school this summer and preparing for our students to return, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to walk around campus and speak to each student personally. I will be focused on working with the students and teachers in every classroom this year, and I intend to be an active participant in your child’s education.
A little bit about me: I started my career 22 years ago in the Palo Alto School District in northern California teaching elementary school. We moved to San Diego 19 years ago, and I taught in the Del Mar School District for several years before moving to Rancho Santa Fe where I was a principal for 13 years. My husband, Tony, and I have been married for 22 years and we have two children, Abigail and Cameron. Both of my kids will be attending Solana Santa Fe this year. In my free time I love to travel, work in my garden, listen to audiobooks while walking, and hang out with family and friends.
Our entire staff has worked hard this summer as we get ready to welcome all of our students back to school. Our custodial and maintenance staff have been cleaning and touching up our beautiful campus. Teachers are preparing classrooms, attending professional development focused on the district’s goals around social and emotional learning, and are planning together to continue to provide stellar academic and social/emotional programming for our students. We are excited to see all of our students back at Skyline for the 2019-2020 school year!
We’ve had a few updates to our campus and surrounding area this year: addition of sound abatement panels in the lunch area, a new garden shed, automatic gate closures for the front of school, an updated Dell gate timer, water run-off mitigation, and adjustments to the grading on Glencrest. You may have noticed construction gates in front of school. Our storm water filtration system was overwhelmed by the amount of water this past year. One of the side effects was the sink-hole in the parking lot last year. The issue should be mitigated by August 20th. You will see contractors in the front of the school, on the field, and on the west hillside. The city of Solana Beach is altering the grading on Glencrest and has a planned completion date of August 26th, just in time for our students to arrive.
School safety is of the utmost importance on our campus. We are committed to continuing to provide a campus that ensures student, staff, and family safety. We have made some updates to our pick up and drop off procedures along with our student expectations to ensure a safe campus for our community. We will have opportunities for parents to lend their voice to the conversation because your input is valued and welcomed as we work together in the months ahead.
1st Annual Back to School Picnic:
I’m excited to announce our Foundation and PTA are hosting a Back to School Picnic for Solana Vista and Skyline families on Monday, August 26 from 4:00-6:00 on the Solana Vista campus for the first time! Families are invited to bring a picnic to enjoy or purchase dinner from one of our many food vendors (Rudy’s, Crust Pizza, Panda Express, SBLL Snack Shack, and Mahalo Shaved Ice). Information about our many wonderful programs and volunteering will be available as well as opportunities to get school spirit wear and make your annual Foundation donations. Music will be playing, fun will be had, and excitement for the new school year will be shared! I hope to see all of you there!
School hours are 8:55 a.m.–3:03 p.m. Supervision will begin at 8:35 a.m. and end at 3:20 p.m. in the afternoon. CDC is always available to families for before and after school care. If you require childcare please remember to register with the CDC. In the morning, students will enter either through the front gate adjacent to the administration office or through the Dell gate. Both the front gate and Dell gate will open at 8:35 a.m. in the morning. Since there is no supervision before 8:35 a.m., please do not drop off your child(ren) any earlier to ensure their safety. Parents/Guardians must stay with and supervise their child(ren) until supervision begins at 8:35 a.m. Students who arrive at 8:55 a.m. or later must be accompanied by a parent to check in at the front office.
Class assignments will be posted on the Parent Portal Demographics Screen after 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 22. Be sure to go to the Parent Portal at https://www.sbsd.k12.ca.us/Domain/1005) prior to August 22 to complete the Student Date Confirmation process. You will not be able to view your child’s teacher if this process is not completed.
Our staff has worked very hard to place all of our students for the upcoming school year. The staff considers many variables in order to create a balanced classroom and please understand teachers cannot guarantee a particular placement. In order to create balanced classes, parent requests for a specific teacher will not be accepted. SBSD policy supports the efforts of our teachers and requires a two-week waiting period before any parent requests for placement changes will be considered.
Mini Open House:
Our welcome back Mini Open House is on Friday, August 23rd. Global Ed (Kinder only) Mini Open House is from 9:00-9:30 a.m. and Grades 1-6 are 9:30-10:15 a.m. This is an opportunity for students and parents to meet their teachers and visit their classrooms. In addition to meeting your classroom teacher, you will also have the opportunity to get information regarding volunteer opportunities, PTA, Foundation, Child Nutrition, Boy’s and Girl’s Club, CDC, and Dad’s Club.
Drop Off and Pick up Procedures/Traffic and Safety Procedures:
In an effort to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and families, please help us in following our updated expectations for drop off and pick up. These will be available to you at our Mini Open House, online, and at Back to School Night. All classroom teachers will discuss Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures with their students on the first day of school to familiarize them with the process and to clarify any questions. Get Connected and Be in the Know!!
At Skyline we are focused on communicating regularly with our families and community. There are several modes of communication that are important for you to know about to keep updated and informed. All school messages will be sent through our Electronic Notification System at https://www.sbsd.k12.ca.us/Page/1125 and you must manually go in to sign up for these notifications. We also use School Messenger for voicemail calls to send out timely messages or for emergency purposes. Additionally, this year we will use Peachjar for all flyers. Look for your weekly Peachjar message on Sunday morning.
