California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

Each spring, Solana Beach students in Grades 3 through 6 participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These assessments in English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics give educators across the state a way to see how well students can write clearly, think critically, and solve problems, which are some of the skills needed to succeed in college and a 21st century career.

In August, you will receive in the mail a Student Score Report showing your child’s scores for ELA and mathematics. This report includes an overall score for each subject, and information about how well your child did in different skill areas. If your child took the assessment in past years, you will also see past scores showing their progress over time.

In 2017, if your child was in Grade 5, he or she was also given a pilot of the new California Science Test based on California’s Next Generation Science Standards. Because this test was a pilot in 2017, the score report will not include a score for science. You can find more information about the California Science Test pilot on the back our your child's score report.

The Solana Beach School District views these assessments as an academic checkup. Like class assignments, unit exams, and progress reports, they are but one gauge of your child’s progress towards the high academic goals set for our students. Our district is continually refining practices to support student learning and success. We know our students will continue to progress toward meeting the challenging goals set. As a reminder, these assessment results are only a snapshot of a student’s performance. Results are used in conjunction with additional information gathered as part of student’s classroom performance. We look forward to supporting your child and partnering with you in their pathways of learning.
