Skyline Reconstruction Information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Solana Beach School District has been working on plans for the reconstruction of its oldest campus, Skyline School. The reconstruction of this facility, which is over 60 years old, is the result of the District successfully securing funding for reconstruction through the General Obligation Bond measure passed by voters in November 2016.
During the period of construction, access to the site is limited to those involved with construction work.

10/16/2018 Update:
The Governing Board of the Solana Beach School District, Superintendent, Jodee Brentlinger,

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Skyline School Reconstruction Project - a project funded by Measure JJ.

Schedule:
The Kindergarten building was turned over to the district as scheduled on October 6th. Student first day in the new classrooms, following the move in activities, was Monday October 15th.
The Kitchen, Lunch Area, and Theater is scheduled to be turned over to the district October 30, 2018. The fields will continue to be under construction through December. Once the field turf is established, students will be able to access the fields - estimated in Spring 2019.

8/23/2018 Update:
Wow. It's been a busy few weeks! Furniture and classroom supplies arrived, landscape continues, solar panel wiring, elevator, fire alarm connections, signage, phone lines and network connectivity are all underway. Play area and parking lot striping is complete. School staff, with help from friends and family members, are setting up classrooms preparing to welcome families next week. 8/9/2018 Update:
Landscape installation underway. Classrooms are receiving final clean and accessory installation. Furniture arrives for the classrooms over the next couple of weeks. Please check the Skyline page for school opening communication at /Page/9.
7/12/2018 Update:
Expect asphalt installation in the play area behind the classroom building the week of July 16.
Play structures and carpet have arrived and installation is underway.
6/28/2018 Update:
No work on Site July 4th, 2018
Interior finishes are well underway - teaching walls, whiteboards, drinking fountains (with bottle fillers), paint, tack panel for pinable surfaces, ceiling tiles, doors, windows, etc. Landscape to begin in early July. Asphalt play area in rear is scheduled to begin the week of July 16. Play structures and flooring (carpet and vinyl) is arriving early July. Construction crews continue to work 6 days a week.
We look forward to welcoming students and families on Monday, August 27 at the Mini Open House - meet teachers and see the awesome new classrooms! First day of school is Tuesday, August 28th. Link to Skyline's webpage and bell schedule.

5/21/2018 Update:
Interior finishes are underway - drywall, paint and t-grid for ceiling tiles. Foundations poured for student gathering seatwalls north of campus. Construction crews continue to work 6 days a week.

4/23/2018 Update:
Asphalt at driveway and parking lot is underway. Roofing continues - both built-up and standing seam. Construction crews continue to work 6 days a week.

4/5/2018 Update:
A traffic advisory: Solana Hills Drive Closure (provided by the City of Solana Beach)
Access to Solana Hills Drive north of Lomas Santa Fe will be closed from April 9th to April 11th.
Please be advised that access to Solana Hills Drive north of Lomas Santa Fe will be closed from Monday, April 9th to Wednesday, April 11th. Full access will be restored Thursday, April 12th. The concrete gutter crossing Solana Hills along the north side of Lomas Santa Fe as well as the sidewalk north of the intersection (north side of Lomas Santa Fe between Solana Hills and Skyline Elementary) will be removed and reconstructed. Due to the proximity of this work to travel lanes, the curb lane along the north side of Lomas Santa Fe will also be closed during construction. Both westbound lanes on Lomas Santa Fe as well as right-turn in/right-turn out at Solana Hills will be open in the evening hours on
Tuesday, April 10th and Wednesday, April 11th.
Please continue to drive safely in the area. Construction workers will park further north on Solana Hills Drive during the duration of the work being performed.

3/21/2018 Update:
Expect roofing to begin within the next two weeks. Work will continue on site as weather permits (including Saturdays).

3/1/2018 Update:
Expect to see work proceeding on Saturdays.
Photo 1: The 5th grade students from Skyline School visited the construction site on 2/9/2018 to sign a steel beam that will be placed in the classroom portion of the building.

Expect to see work proceeding on Saturdays. Concrete trucks, earth moving equipment and approximately 50 workers will be on site. Concrete slab on grad for the second story is now complete. Interior walls on the first floor are currently in the framing stage.
Schedule: Burning Question - Will the new Skyline be ready for students in August 2018?
We are happy to report that the reconstruction of Skyline is currently on schedule for students to return Fall 2018. The classroom building will be ready. Please watch this website for student registration instructions as we get closer to the new school year.

1/18/2018 Update:
Expect to see work proceeding on Saturdays. Concrete trucks, earth moving equipment and approximately 20 workers will be on site.
In the next two weeks: Expect to see concrete foundation pours and masonry on the second floor classroom building.
Limited work is expected on site December 30, 2017 and no work on site is expected January 1, 2018. Happy New Year!
12/21/2017 Update:

We are scheduled to perform asphalt patch work on Lomas Santa Fe near the Stevens intersection on December 26th. This work is expected to occur during working hours.

12/7/2017 Update:
Expect to see work proceeding on Saturdays. Concrete trucks, small earth moving equipment and approximately 20 workers will be on site.
Next week, expect the following work:
SDG&E and the district's contractor are scheduled to perform work on Lomas Santa Fe near the Stevens intersection. This is to connect the gas service line. Traffic control will be set up at the beginning of each work evening 6:00 PM and be removed at the end of each work night (2:30 AM).
- Monday 12-11-17 6:00 PM to 2:30AM Saw cut street and side walk panel grind and set trench plates begin to pot hole utilities
- Tuesday 12-12-17 6:00 PM to 2:30 AM excavate weld holes and begin to excavate service trench
- Wednesday 12-13-17 6:00 PM to 2:30 AM complete trench excavation and have SDG&E inspection
- Saturday 12-16-17 6:00 PM to 2:30 AM SDG&E crew will install gas service and work on RFS on existing gas service
- Schedule for paving to be determined
Please continue to exercise caution when driving, cycling, walking and jogging on and along Lomas Santa Fe Drive.
The construction crew took a break from work for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Expect to see small earth moving equipment, masonry workers and various other trades on site Saturday, 12/2/2017. The project is moving along as scheduled. Approximately 80 workers are on site daily (M-F).
11/17/2017 Update:
Work will proceed on site Saturday 11/18/2017. Concrete will be poured at the first floor classroom building. Concrete saw cutting will also occur.
Small earth moving equipment will be used on site.
Masonry began the week of November 13, 2017 and will continue on the first floor for approximately three weeks.
No workers will be on site for the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend (11/23-11/25/2017).
Work will proceed on site of Friday 11/10/17 and Saturday 11/11/2017. Concrete will be poured at the first floor building.
Small earth moving equipment will be used on site.
Masonry will begin the week of November 13, 2017.
10/17/2017 Update:
Underground utilities for the building pads (plumbing and electrical) continue working west to east.
Saturday work will be performed. Some large and small earth moving equipment will be used and possible concrete placement.

East, Center and West drives have been formed and concrete has been poured.
The 36" storm drain running north/south through the project is complete. This storm drain directs water from the northern neighborhoods to the storm drain on Lomas Santa Fe Drive.

8/30/2017 Update
The first building pad is ready for installation of underground utilities. No work is scheduled for Saturday, 9/2/2017.
8/23/2017 Update
Off-site work on Lomas Santa Fe Drive will be completed 8/25/2017 (except landscape and pavers). All lanes on Lomas Santa Fe will be opened. The sidewalk will continue to be closed. Please continue to read and follow the posted instructions for safety. Construction crews are scheduled to start working 10 hour days (8/16/2017-8/25/2017) and work is scheduled for Saturday, 8/26/2017.
8/16/2017 Update
Off-site work on Lomas Santa Fe Drive will continue through 8/28/2017. The sidewalk will continue to be closed. Please continue to read and follow the posted instructions for safety.
Construction crews are scheduled to start working 10 hour days (8/16/2017-8/25/2017) and work is scheduled for Saturday, 8/19/2017.
8/4/2017 Update
During this portion of the off-site work along Lomas Santa Fe from Solana Hills Drive to Glencrest Drive, the sidewalk will be closed. Pedestrians are to use the sidewalk on the south side of Lomas Santa Fe for this block. The contractor is making every effort to complete this phase of the construction prior to the start of the school year in late August.
No Saturday work is on the schedule for the immediate future.
Installation of the retaining wall at the field area is underway.
7/13/2017 Update
Site grading and off-site work is well underway. Please exercise caution when traveling along Lomas Santa Fe and observe all signage. Public safety is very important.
6/30/2017 Update
Construction workers may be on site for 10 hours per day as well as some Saturdays. As of this morning, remaining buildings to be demolished include Building A, Room 9, Hex C and Hex D.
6/29/2017 Update:
Temporary fence was installed today at the perimeter of the property and approximately one-half of the school buildings have been demolished. Materials are being sorted for recycle. The site is being graded in anticipation of site retaining wall installation beginning in the next few weeks.
Work on Lomas Santa Fe Drive along the Skyline property is expected to commence 7/5/2017. Traffic control will be in place.
The district completed moving the materials and furniture out of the school on schedule this week. The temporary classrooms on the lower playground have been removed. Demolition of various site conditions are underway. Temporary fencing will be assembled and demolition of the school buildings will begin week of 6/26/17. Demolition of the buildings and grading of the site is scheduled to take seven to eleven weeks.
Work on Lomas Santa Fe Drive along the Skyline property is expected to commence 7/5/2017. Traffic control will be in place.
6/19/2017 Update:
Construction is scheduled to start the week of 6/19. The district will comply with the City Ordinance hours of 7am-7pm Monday thru Friday. Demolition and fencing will commence mid next week. The district will comply with Air Quality Control Board regulations and any dust from the activities will be mitigated as much as possible during the course of construction.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the project - May 2017
When will reconstruction take place?
Reconstruction will begin just after school ends in June 2017. The old buildings will be demolished, and the new buildings will be constructed during the 2017-18 school year. The plan has the new buildings ready for occupancy for the start of the 2018-19 school year.
Will the students stay on campus during construction?
It is important to have students off campus during construction. This ensures student safety and shortens the construction timeline.
San Dieguito built a temporary campus at Earl Warren for use during construction, why not do the same for Skyline?
The Earl Warren campus is much larger that the Skyline campus. Trying to fit a temporary campus on the Skyline property while building the new facility would create safety and construction challenges. It would also lengthen the construction timeline by at least 50% and greatly increase costs.
What options were explored for interim student housing?
The District reviewed a range of options such as construction of temporary classrooms on the Solana Vista campus, moving all of the Skyline students to campuses in Carmel Valley, building a temporary campus on the parking lot at Skyline, and finding an off-site location for a temporary Skyline campus.
Where will the Skyline students attend school during reconstruction?
We have secured an agreement with San Dieguito Union High School District which will allow our district to use some of the temporary classrooms at Earl Warren Middle School for Skyline students. Unfortunately, San Dieguito is not able to leave all of those classrooms in place for us. They must remove many of the classrooms to complete environmental mitigation as a part of the construction of Earl Warren. We will be able to use enough classrooms to house the 4th through 6th grade program, but not the entire Skyline student population.
Is it safe for Skyline students to attend school on the Earl Warren campus?
We will work closely with our colleagues in San Dieguito to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the Skyline students. Security systems and equipment will be in place, and the Skyline students will not be in the same buildings, parking lots, or fields as the middle school students. The bell schedules will remain staggered to minimize traffic impacts.
Where will the Global Education students attend school since there is not sufficient room at Earl Warren?
We have classroom space that could be made available at Solana Highlands (one of our Carmel Valley schools) that can accommodate the eight Global Education classes during Skyline’s reconstruction. This will be temporary for the 2017-18 school year only, and the Global Education classes return to Skyline with the rest of the students when the school reopens for the 2018-19 school year.
How will the Global Education students get to Carmel Valley?
The District will provide transportation for students at no cost to the families. The Presbyterian church across the street from the current Skyline campus will be used for student pick-up and drop-off.
Why move the Global Education program?
Global Education is a multi-age program, so it is very important that the classes stay together. Our district is committed to ensuring Global Education stays intact for the school year during which Skyline will be under construction (2017-18).
Do the Global Education teachers support this temporary relocation plan?
Teachers from Global Education have been on the design team for the “new” Skyline. They support temporarily moving the program to Solana Highlands and are committed to supporting the students and families during that process.
