2026-27 Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning 2026-27 Overview
Strategic Planning 2026-27 Overview
In Solana Beach School District, we are committed to helping all learners find their voice, share their gifts, and advance the world. To support this vision, we have partnered with Learner-Centered Collaborative (LCC), a value-aligned nonprofit organization that will work alongside our students, families, staff, and community to develop a shared vision and strategic plan for the future.
Together, SBSD and LCC are engaging in a Framework for the Future, a collaborative strategic planning process that will result in a 3-5 year strategic plan. This plan will identify the priorities, goals, and actions that will guide our district’s work.
The Framework for the Future Process
The strategic planning process will include several interconnected steps:
- Discover and Listen - We begin by listening and learning from our community. This includes understanding the experiences, perspectives, aspirations, strengths, and opportunities identified by students, families, staff, and community members.
- Imagine and Define - Using what we learn, we will explore what is possible for learning and for the future of our schools. Together, we will identify a shared vision for what we want learners to know, do, and become.
- Prioritize and Plan - We will identify the most important areas of focus and develop strategic priorities, goals, and actions that can move us toward our shared vision.
- Align and Commit - The final Framework will bring these priorities together into a clear roadmap for the next 3–5 years, including measures of progress and ways we will hold ourselves accountable.
- Implement and Learn - Strategic planning does not end when the plan is completed. We will use the Framework to guide our work, monitor progress, learn from our experiences, and make adjustments along the way.
September 18 Discovery Visit
The first phase of this work began with a Discovery Visit on September 18. During this visit, a contingent of parents, certificated and classified staff, district leaders, and LCC spent time listening to and engaging with students and staff across all schools and the Child Development Center.
The purpose of the Discovery Visit was to build an initial understanding of our district, including our strengths, experiences, aspirations, and opportunities for growth. This information will help LCC and SBSD better understand our current context and inform the next stages of the Framework for the Future strategic planning process.
The Discovery Visit is just the beginning. The insights gathered will help shape opportunities for broader community engagement and collaboration throughout the planning process.
Guiding Coalition
Over the next several months, a team of certificated and classified staff, Board members, parent representatives, principals, union leadership, and District Office leaders will spend three days with LCC analyzing and aligning data to form a common, objective understanding of SBSD’s current successes and opportunities for change. They will begin the creative and analytical work of forming a clear, inspiring, and actionable plan of core initiatives. Finally, they will identify roadblocks and resources needed to ensure the strategy becomes practical rather than theoretical.
Opportunities to Collaborate
There will be multiple opportunities for our community to participate as the Framework for the Future plan takes shape. These opportunities will include listening sessions, conversations, surveys, workshops, and other ways for students, families, staff, and community members to share their perspectives and ideas.
Additional opportunities and dates will be shared soon. We encourage you to participate when opportunities become available. Every perspective helps us develop a more complete understanding of where we are today and what is possible for SBSD's future.

Employee Opportunities for Input
From Monday, September 20 through Friday, September 25, staff at every school and the District Office were provided the opportunity to share anonymous feedback to the following five questions:
1. What are you most proud of about your school or the district?
2. What does teaching and learning look like now in your classroom? What do you wish it looked like?
3. What current programs, practices, or aspects of the district would you want to preserve or build upon?
4. If the strategic plan could meaningfully improve one aspect of our district, what would you prioritize?
5. If you had a magic wand, what would you change about your school or the district?
For staff who were unable to provide feedback on the posters, a survey containing the same five questions was distributed electronically to all SBSD employees with an additional opportunity to participate.
