March 08, 2020
Dear Solana Highlands Families,
Parent/Teacher Conference Week
Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place Monday through Friday, March 9-13. Thanks for celebrating successes with your child and continuing to work closely with their teachers to concentrate on areas in need of increased focus.
Any inquiries about next year’s placement are to be put in writing and sent to Mrs. Jara, if desired. Please avoid using the limited time of the parent teacher conference to discuss next year’s placement as this is a process and does not rest solely on the classroom teacher.
March Parent Education Event - "Pop Culture and the Noise It Creates"
Solana Beach School District is committed to educating the whole child, including the social and emotional well-being of all our students. Our school, Solana Highlands, continues to provide many opportunities for all of our students to develop social and emotional skills throughout the school day. We know that one major factor in our world today that has a huge impact on our children’s social/emotional well-being is the influence of social media in our children’s lives.
We are very fortunate to have Paul LeBaron, a high-ranking member of a large municipal police department in Southern California, come to Solana Beach School District on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, to address this issue. Commander LeBaron will be presenting on “Pop Culture and the Noise It Creates.” Parents/guardians and community members will have the opportunity to choose from two sessions, both held at Skyline School. The first session is from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. and the second is from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Both presentations will be held in Skyline’s Theater. This is a presentation for adults only, however, childcare is available. If you are interested in attending, please click on the link to RSVP, and sign up for childcare if it is needed. We hope that you can all join us for this very special presentation.
Solana Highlands Foundation Auction
Our wonderful teachers and staff have donated amazing experiences that you can bid on for your children. Additionally, some of our local businesses have donated fun experiences and items for you! Go to 32auctions.com/SH2020 for more details and to bid on items. All proceeds help support STREAM, Art, PE, and Technology at Solana Highlands.
Citizens' Oversight Committee
The Solana Beach School District is seeking applications for Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee members for the 2020-2021 school year. Committee members serve two-year terms and provide oversight of the District's $105 million school bond construction program. The committee ensures bond proceeds are only used to support school construction projects authorized by local voters in November 2016.
Parent Advisory Committee Meeting - Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP)
The Instructional Services Department welcomes you to join our Parent Advisory Committee meeting to learn more about our District Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and progress made toward district goals. The LCAP is intended to ensure school districts provide a high-quality instructional program for all students. It describes how the District intends to meet annual goals for all students, with specific actions to address required state and local priorities.

COVID-19 (a.k.a. Corona Virus)
I made this quick 4-minute video for our students to help prevent joking, fear, and misinformation regarding the virus. Classroom teachers shared it with their classes last week.

Please take the opportunity to stop by the lost and found rack this week. Items not claimed will be donated at the end of the week.
