SV teachers say THANK YOU to our generous PTA:   To show gratitude for their support, the SV teachers arrived at school upon returning from our February break to a plethora of additional teaching supplies and other goodies to support instruction in the classrooms.  The PTA was graciously thanking the teachers for their support for the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser.  The staff at SV wants our PTA and parents to know we appreciate all you do for us and our students to make our school a special place to be.

Parent Education Opportunity: “Pop Culture and the Noise it Creates”:  On March 11th, Solana Beach School District will be hosting a parent education opportunity to support our work with Social Emotional Learning.  We know that one major factor in our world today on the social emotional well-being of our children is the influence of social media.  Paul LeBron, a high-ranking member of a large municipal police department in Southern California will be addressing this issue.  Parents have the opportunity to attend one of two sessions on March 11:  1:00-2:30 pm or 6:00-7:30 pm.  This is an adult only presentation; however, child care is provided.  If you are interested in attending, please go to https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCSDyfjUWqxz0OhXjdds6lYNSpcwxJgqbI0tSUEcGmws2RJg/viewform to RSVP and sign up for childcare if needed. We hope you can join us for this very special presentation.

I have been a music teacher in the Solana Beach School District since 2002. Having grown up in a family of concert musicians and music teachers, music has always been an integral part of my life. I am so happy to have the opportunity every day to share my love and knowledge of all things music with the wonderful students of SBSD, while helping each one build his or her own personal connection with music.

A little something to think about:

All Learning is Social and Emotional Book Study

    Chapter 2: Identity and Agency

Identity is the understanding of WHO you are--your strengths as well as awareness of shortcomings

Agency is the capacity to act in empowered and autonomous ways

Developing identity and agency allows a person to “open up” to learning. With a strong sense of identity and agency, students learn that they are the driver of their own bus--they can set and meet goals, they can handle failure with a growth mindset, they can persevere and show grit, and they develop resiliency.

When we, as the adults,  try to “drive the bus” too much for our children, we deprive them of the opportunity to build these skills.

So take a moment to ponder these questions.

    • How have you helped your child to recognize their strengths this year?
    • What are some ideas for next steps (in your family or the school community) in helping students develop self-confidence, grit and resiliency?

I am always open to ideas and thoughts about how we can continue to meet the social emotional needs of our students.  I would love to hear your thoughts!!
