Solana Beach School District is committed to educating the whole child and supporting our students to thrive in school and in life. We believe that students' experiences in grades K-6 provide an important foundation for future success.
When we think of educating the whole child, social and emotional development must be considered as an integral part of overall instruction. Social and emotional learning is broadly understood as a process through which individuals build awareness and skills in managing emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible decisions that support success in school and in life.
Our social-emotional support services will be delivered in a variety of ways this year, including the integration of social-emotional skills throughout the school day, both in the classroom and throughout the school campus for all students in kindergarten through 6th grade, and with small group or individualized services for students who require more intense support needs.
To help support our focus on social-emotional learning this year, we will be administering a social-emotional universal screening to all K-6 students twice a year in both the Fall and Spring. Our screener is a brief eight-question survey aligned to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. The results from the screener will help us understand the overall well-being of our students from their point of view and to identify those students who may potentially need additional support.
The social-emotional screening data will be used in conjunction with other data collected this year (e.g., MAP assessment) as part of our regular school practices to examine the overall academic and social-emotional growth of our students and to provide effective prevention and early intervention services. The results from the screening will be kept confidential, just as we do with all our student educational data.
