The Solana Beach Governing Board believes that regular attendance plays a key role in student achievement. The Board recognizes its responsibility under the law to ensure that students attend school regularly.

Excused Absences

  • For justifiable personal reasons, including, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats.

Unexcused Absences

Absences from school for any reason not outlined in Education Code 48205 will be considered unexcused and the student will be considered truant.

A truant student is defined in EC 48260 as

“Any pupil subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the school-day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.”

  • Parent must notify the school office of student’s tardy or absence.

  • A note from the physician may be required when an excessive number of medical excuses are noted.

The principal or designee reserves the right to determine whether an absence is excused and/or if there is a pattern of non-attendance.
