Students first receive curriculum instruction in their classrooms with their classroom teachers. This is followed by a lab activity in the Science Lab, where the classroom teacher and our Science Specialist, Mr. Kyle, reinforce the classroom lesson with a lab experiment. This also provides an environment for scientific exploration and application of the Scientific Method. |

Our SSF Science program also includes “Ocean Week.” This is one of the most highly anticipated weeks of the year. Each year during Ocean Week, our classroom teachers, supported by a member of the UC Berkeley MARE teaching staff, bring the ocean into the classroom and immerse the children in a hands-on learning environment. Each grade level explores a different part of the ocean environment. For a full week, the entire school is devoted to exploring the scientific wonders found along our very own coastline.
Mr. Kyle has plans for a before school Science Discovery Club, various family science nights including Star Parties with the San Diego Astronomy Association, technology and art collaborations, and fun garden science.
Finally, the PTO sponsors a Science Fair every spring. All fifth and sixth grade students participate (with optional participation by fourth graders). Each project is of the student’s own choosing, but must adhere to the scientific method and be presented in a standard format. Projects are judged by scientists within the San Diego scientific community, and are showcased at our Open House and Spring Fling.
Who is our Science Specialist?
Mr. Kyle is a credentialed teacher and passionate backyard scientist. He can often be found in the evening with his telescope. He is also a surfer, gardener and backpacker/hiker. Mr. Kyle writes a science column for the Coast News. He looks forward to facilitating an inclusive and fun science learning environment.
What is the goal of our Science Program?
Our goal is to extend your child’s knowledge of basic scientific facts into a hands-on exploration of their application. Through experiments and investigations performed in a lab environment, Mr. Kyle is able to teach your children how to observe, communicate, compare, sort, categorize, relate, infer and apply information. |
