Dear Skyline Families:
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our third grade families over at Solana Vista. Beginning with this edition of The Wave, parents of Solana Vista's third grade students will receive a copy of The Wave in their Wednesday envelopes. The Wave is a bi-monthly publication at Skyline School that highlights school events and provides information about upcoming activities. I would like to extend an invitation to our incoming 4th grade parents to join me for coffee and a school tour on Thursday, May 17th, at 10:00 a.m. We will meet in the Activity Center. This is an opportunity to have an informal meeting with me, ask questions, and gather information about our programs here at Skyline. I hope you can join me. Solana Vista parents are also invited to our Open House on Thursday, May 24th, from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Finally, Solana Vista’s 3rd graders will be coming to visit Skyline and our 4th grade classes in June. We are so excited to have you join our Skyline family this fall. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to come for a visit or call me.
On May 7th – 11th, all second through sixth grade students will be participating in the mandated statewide assessment program or STAR. The STAR is made up of multiple-choice tests on reading, language, spelling, and mathematics that measure student performance on specific grade-level standards established by the State Board of Education. All tests are untimed.
While multiple choice tests like these can only cover a small part of the curriculum we teach, individual test results provide one measure of student learning, along with information we have from other assessments such as our district MAP assessment, class assignments, and teacher evaluations. Grade-level and school scores also help us see strengths and weaknesses in our instructional program, and trends and patterns across all our students.
Our goal is to help students approach the STAR test with seriousness and confidence. Since our students will be taking standardized tests throughout their school careers, we feel that one of our responsibilities is to help children become familiar with the multiple-choice format and to begin to teach them strategies for taking these kinds of tests.
We ask parents to help during the testing period as well. You can support your child by making sure he/she has plenty of sleep; eats regular, healthy meals (including breakfast); and comes to school every day on time. Please schedule any necessary appointments after school during this week. Maintaining a positive attitude and reducing stress at home and school supports students so they can more accurately show us what they know and can do on these tests. We encourage you to join us in cheering your child on, and in dispelling any small anxieties he or she may have.
