About Skyline School
Skyline School, a Nationally Distinguished School, is located on Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach. It was built in phases between 1955 and 1961, and underwent a substantial modernization project in the summer of 2000. Skyline has an enrollment of 500 students with 20 instructional classrooms, in addition to a computer lab, a science lab, an art room, music room, activity center and library/media center.
The student profile is composed of 83% white, 15% Hispanic, and 2% other. Educational programs include a 4th – 6th grade program, a K-6 Global Education program, and a K-6 Special Education program. Skyline has a strong educational program that emphasizes a positive and supportive learning environment with clear and consistent standards for behavior.
The students at Skyline School demonstrate high academic achievement in their class work and on their standardized test scores. Skyline consistently ranks at or near the top in the county and state in standardized testing. At present, its API score is 928. The high scores are due, in part, to parent involvement. Parents support Skyline by volunteering, fundraising, and participating in school activities. They are actively involved in the decision-making processes by participating in the School Site Council and Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Skyline is a great place to attend elementary school!
4th – 6th Grade Program
Most of the elementary-aged students living in the northwest portion of Solana Beach attend Solana Vista School for grades K-3. In the fourth grade, students transfer to Skyline School to enjoy their upper elementary years. This unique configuration allows both sites more flexibility in designing and implementing programs specific to the developmental needs of its students.
Global Education
Global Education is a parent choice program offered to students in K-6 who reside within the boundaries of the Solana Beach School District. Global Education is comprised of multi-age classrooms and teaches the social studies and science curricula using a three-year cycle enabling all students to study the same concepts at the same time. The activities associated with these concepts are differentiated to meet the developmental needs of the students.
The enrollment process for Global Education begins in late January of each year. If more students apply than there are spaces, a lottery is held to select students.
Special Education
Skyline School provides a wide range of Special Education services. There is a Speech and Language program, a Learning Resource Specialist Program, and one Regional Severely Handicapped classroom. All of our special education teachers and general education intervention teachers work together under the umbrella of our Learning Center.
Faculty and Staff
The Skyline staff is second to none! There are 23 credentialed teachers and a support staff numbering 30 to serve 500 students. All of our classroom teachers hold the appropriate credential(s). There are two part-time music teachers, an English Language Development Teacher, and a Reading Intervention Teacher. Additionally, students attend extracurricular classes in art, computers, science and physical education (PE) one time a week with specialty teachers.
Parent Involvement
Parents and teachers work in partnership at Skyline to provide a positive and supportive learning environment and the best educational setting possible for students. Parent volunteers assist with classroom activities, field trips and special projects. On-going communication with parents is established through the Wave newsletter, classroom newsletters, parent conferences, Back-to-School Night and Open House in the spring, School Site Council, PTA meetings and Principal coffees.
Gifted and Talented Education Program
Solana Beach provides an enriched program for all students in order to give every child an opportunity to display their gifts and talents. This is accomplished by incorporating strategies within daily lessons to encourage critical and creative thinking. Since research does not support, nor do we believe in, "tracking" young elementary children, the district supports the nurturing period in grades K-5. During this time, both formal and informal data is collected which may indicate a child is gifted. Individual Learning Plans (ILP) are developed to meet the unique needs of these children. Formal GATE identification occurs in the 6th grade if a child meets the district criteria, which consists of the Otis-Lennon Test.
Character Education
Skyline's approach to character education is based on three components:
a literature-based study of values, service learning, and character development
using the Steps to Respect program. All components develop and promote the
importance of intrinsic values over external rewards. Children will feel connected
to the Skyline community while developing a broader perspective and appreciation
of the world around them. Skyline students will recognize the effect of their
actions on others, will acquire skills in conflict resolution, and will exhibit
compassionate character.
