Intervention Programs
(Non-Special Education)

Intervention programs are offered during the school day, or before or after school.  Subject areas of emphasis are Language Arts and Math and are offered to students who are below proficient in grade-level content standards.  These programs vary by school. Specific information regarding interventions offered may be found by contacting the school site.

Title I services are offered at Solana Vista only.  The primary focus of Title I intervention is English Language Arts.  Solana Vista employs a Title I reading specialist to assist students during the day and to provide additional reading instruction and practice.

English Learners

SBSD English Learner population represents over 30 languages and approximately 10% of our students.  English Learners are identified based upon the Home Language Survey and the results of the California English Language Development Test (CELDT).  Under State law, three programs are available to English Learners.

  1. Structured English Immersion is for students who have less than reasonable fluency in English by scoring as a Beginner, Early Intermediate, or Intermediate on the CELDT.  Instruction is in English and the class is taught by teachers holding a credential that is specific to addressing the needs of English Learners.  Students may also receive extra English Language Development (ELD) assistance during the day with an ELD assistant on a pull-out basis.
  2. Mainstream English is for students who have reasonable fluency in English by scoring Early Advanced or Advanced.  Teachers are not required to hold a special credential but students are expected to receive assistance in ELD until they can be reclassified to fully English proficient.
  3. Alternative Program:  SBSD does not currently offer bilingual or dual immersion classes because we do not have adequate requests for such programs.  The law states that a school needs 20 or more pupils at a grade level to request an alternative program of the district’s choice.
