In the Solana Beach School District students are scored using a four-point rubric, with four being the highest. A score of “3” is considered proficient at the end of the year. These papers are expected to be written "on demand," which means that students do not have support from others before, during, or after completion of the writing task. Students may re-read their first draft papers and edit and revise them on their own. They do not have access to resources such as dictionaries.

The sample responses, called anchor papers, illustrate student work at each score point of the four-point rubric. Teacher commentaries describe the characteristics of the paper that support the score. It should be remembered, however, that each piece represents only one example of student work at a particular score level. In reality, the range of student work within any of the four score points is broad and papers will demonstrate differing combinations of strengths and weaknesses.
