The Solana Beach School District gives high priority to learning activities that challenge higher-order thinking skills and engage students in hands-on activities. Frameworks developed by teachers statewide, and adopted by the California State Board of Education, serve as a guide for curriculum. Care is taken to design a thinking curriculum to meet individual needs. Major highlights include: English/Language Arts The literature-based program integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing, teaches composing as a means of clarifying thinking, and teaches a variety of reading comprehension strategies. Click here for the online California Treasures textbook. Math The math program focuses on ways to develop mathematical skills that encourage thinking. It involves the use of manipulatives, calculators, and technology, and encourages children to become confident problem solvers. This program includes the math strands of logic, measurement, pattern/functions, probability, and statistics. Click here for the online Math textbook. Science The science
program encourages children to comprehend the nature of the physical
universe. The program includes the integrated study of earth, life
and physical science, understanding History/Social Science The
history-social science program focuses on a knowledge and understanding
of history and the social sciences to prepare students as citizens
in a democratic society. It introduces the concepts of democracy,
citizenship, ethics, cultures, societies, Computers & Technology Each
site is equipped with a computer lab and computer aide support for
direct instruction and the integration of technology into the curriculum. |
