Curriculum

The Solana Beach School District gives high priority to learning activities that challenge higher-order thinking skills and engage students in hands-on activities. Frameworks developed by teachers statewide, and adopted by the California State Board of Education, serve as a guide for curriculum. Care is taken to design a thinking curriculum to meet individual needs. Major highlights include:

English/Language Arts  The literature-based program integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing, teaches composing as a means of clarifying thinking, and teaches a variety of reading comprehension strategies. Click here for the online California Treasures textbook.

Math  The math program focuses on ways to develop mathematical skills that encourage thinking. It involves the use of manipulatives, calculators, and technology, and encourages children to become confident problem solvers. This program includes the math strands of logic, measurement, pattern/functions, probability, and statistics. Click here for the online Math textbook.

Science  The science program encourages children to comprehend the nature of the physical universe. The program includes the integrated study of earth, life and physical science, understanding
and use of process thinking skills, and introduction to the tools of
the scientist and technology. Click here for the online Science textbook.

History/Social Science  The history-social science program focuses on a knowledge and understanding of history and the social sciences to prepare students as citizens in a democratic society. It introduces the concepts of democracy, citizenship, ethics, cultures, societies,
and economic systems. Much of the framework is based on the assumption that history comes alive "through a story well told."

Computers & Technology  Each site is equipped with a computer lab and computer aide support for direct instruction and the integration of technology into the curriculum.

Textbooks and Materials  Solana Beach School District sets a high priority on ensuring that sufficient, current textbooks and materials are available to support the school's instructional program. Solana Beach School District holds an annual Public Hearing to determine that each school within the District has sufficient and good quality textbooks or instructional materials, pursuant to the settlement of Williams vs. the State of California. All students, including English Learners are given their own individual textbooks in core subjects
for use in the classroom and to take home to complete required homework assignments. All textbooks and instructional materials
are aligned with the California State Content Standards and Frameworks. Solana Beach School District follows the State Instructional Materials Adoption Cycle and reviews instructional materials in each curricular area within a seven-year cycle.
